In my over 20 years working in Human Resources, I have dealt
with people at all stages of their careers.
I’ve spent time with those starting off their careers all the way up the
hierarchy to executive leaders and CEO’s.
At every level of your career, you will be faced with challenges;
your beliefs about yourself as an employee and as a leader; and you will be
faced with opportunities to learn about yourself and your role in your career.
Growing up, a lot of us have been told to study hard, get a
job with a good company and work your way up the hierarchy until you get to
retire, and then you get to enjoy your life.
This advice may have worked a few decades ago, and maybe even just
before Covid hit. Especially since the
beginning of the Covid pandemic that brought lockdowns, working from home and
working in hybrid environments, a number of people are reflecting on their
careers and they find that their careers haven’t panned out the way they
expected, and some even feel that their careers are no longer fulfilling. There have been a number of articles written
about “The Great Resignation” where people have re-evaluated their careers and
have made the bold decision to leave their jobs to pursue more fulfilling roles
and careers and to pursue a better work/life balance.
If your goal is to focus on your career, whether to grow in
your current field, or to re-define your career, partnering with a coach can
help you move forward.
What Is Career Coaching?
Career coaching is about helping the client to identify your
careers goals and how to achieve them.
It can be beneficial for anyone who is :
Starting your Career
Starting your career can be daunting. Studying for your chosen field provides you
with the theoretical knowledge needed but there are other skills needed to
succeed in the world of work, such as communication skills, workplace etiquette
and how to develop your personal brand.
Your coach can help you identify these skills needed and guide you to
develop them. Your coach can also guide
you in dealing with challenges that may arise when you start your first
job. These challenges could be how to
deal with conflict, office politics etc.
Making a Transition
Whether you are thinking of making a transition into a new
role or a new career altogether, your coach can help you identify if that
transition is right for you and can guide you through the transition
process. Your coach will act as a
sounding board and will help you overcome any challenges that you may come
across during the transition.
Growing and Developing your Career
You may not know exactly how you want your career to develop
or you may already know what your next career move should be. In either case, your coach can help you to
identify your ideal career path and can help you set your milestone and set the
action steps needed to achieve this.
Your coach will also guide you through any challenges and help your
brainstorm ideas to where you want to be.
Re-joining the Workforce
Whether you took time off from formal employment to raise
your family, to start your own business or to recover from a prolonged illness,
getting back into the workforce can be a difficult adjustment. Your coach can help guide you as you prepare
to re-join the workforce and once you do, can helo you adjust to working and
formal employment again.
What exactly will we do in our Sessions?
Don’t expect your coach to give you all the answers and tell
you what to do. Your coach’s job is to
help you find out what you want to do with your career. They will do this by evaluating how you currently
feel about your career and what your ideal day at work would be like. Your coach will help you understand your
strengths and how to play to them. They
will help you identify areas of improvement and how to fix these. They will help you identify the beliefs that
you have about yourself and if these beliefs serve you or hold you back from
achieving success.
By working with a coach, you will have someone who will help
you to personalise your career path. You
coach will also hold you accountable to achieving success and will keep you
motivated. Your coach will give you
honest and open feedback so that you can grown not just in your career but in
your personal life as well.
If you are still unsure about coaching and what to find out
more, get in touch for a free introductory call. In this session, we will talk about where you
are right now and where you want to be.
I will answer any questions that you may have about coaching and help
you to see if career coaching is for you.
